The Economy: Money Disappears, Lies Reappear

by Bill Zalud

Enterprises thinking about cutting budgets for investigations and background screenings should think again. National and international studies recently show that job applicants at all position levels are more likely to lie as the recession grows.

At the same time, and thanks in large part to the Internet, newer, less expensive and accurate screening services offer a menu of information services that better fit into today's shrinking budgets.

In one study, a shocking 64 percent of job applicants bent the truth.

The Risk Advisory Group analyzed 2,900 applications for employment, resumes and curriculum vitas. A resume is a document that contains a summary or listing of relevant job experience and education. It is closely related to a similar document, curriculum vitae (CV). Common hiring practices call for the applicant to fill out an enterprise's own job candidate form as well as, under federal law, to provide consent for the enterprise to check out the information provided.

U.S. Homeland Security Chief Visits L.A. Facilities; Local Officials Petition for Safety Upgrades as They Show Napolitano Around Ports and LAX

The nation's top domestic security official toured Southern California's bustling ports and biggest airport Monday as local officials plied her with requests for financial help to upgrade potentially vulnerable facilities. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano took a flyover of the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles and surveyed recent security improvements at Los Angeles International Airport, including better fencing, systems to screen passenger vehicles and concrete barriers to prevent vehicles from crashing into airline terminals.
What upgrades are needed?

Bingaman Eyes Border Security

U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman on Monday praised local, state and federal law enforcement officials in Las Cruces for improving border security in light of ongoing drug-related violence in Mexico. "Deadly violence continues to be a problem in Mexico," he said. "I am working on many fronts to take this problem head-on and ensure our border communities remain safe."
How can the borders be secured?

Cyber Spying a Growing Threat to All

Ghost hackers infiltrating the computers of Tibetan exiles and the U.S. electric grid have pulled the curtain back on 21st-century espionage as nefarious as anything from the Cold War -- and far more difficult to stop. Nowadays, a hacker with a high-speed Internet connection, knowledge of computer security and some luck can pilfer information thought to be safely ensconced in a digital locker. And the threat is growing, with countries -- including the U.S. -- pointing fingers at each other even as they ramp up their own cyber espionage.
What kind of damage can cyber attacks do?

SEC Cover 4/09 Security MagazineThe Integrator Relationship

It's no longer "come and go" for systems integrators; it's now partnerships with enterprise security leaders that go beyond technology to business and risk management goals. The combination of more encompassing risk management needs, especially in this year's economic environment, and more complex security technologies have driven security executives and their integrators closer together for a longer period of time.
