Top 25 Most Influential People SEC1208-rollover-cover-story
in the Security Industry

by Erin J. Wolford

In a moment of weakness, some of us naturally rise to the challenge, while others see a vacancy in something they deem important and strive to fill. Whichever type, leaders initiate communication, create partnerships and guide his or her team toward success.

Our industry's leaders are those we read about, hear about or speak about. This is Security Magazine's third annual Top 25 Most Influential People in the Security Industry list for 2008, which includes government leaders, industry authors, CSOs and research pioneers, to name a few.

Many of this year's Top 25 emphasize communication as the key to a successful security outfit, while others insist on partnering within the industry. But all of those listed here have brought something to the table that has spurred his or her team on as a necessary portion of the entire picture. Read on to see who you should partner with in the coming years.

Axis Sees Rise in Demand for Fuel Depot Surveillance
Solutions as Recession Bites

Axis Communications' partner LDE Data Communications Limited (LDE) has seen unprecedented demand for its fuel depot security solution 'SmartAlarms' following a significant rise in fuel theft during 2008. Several police forces including West Yorkshire and Gwent reported a near tripling of fuel theft-related crimes after price rises in their jurisdictions this year, amounting to several reported incidents across the country each week.
Can surveillance deter fuel thieves?

Food Security Seeks Cyber Assistance

Many of us remember or may have been affected by a recent nationwide salmonella outbreak originally thought to be caused by tainted tomatoes that was then later determined to be caused by jalapeno and serrano peppers from Mexico. By the time the cause was determined, it ended up costing both industries millions, and causing many unsuspecting consumers much discomfort.
How can we secure our food supply?

Schools Add Bomb Detection to Teachers' Duties

Columbia Public Schools teachers become an unofficial bomb squad if someone threatens to blow up a school. If a bomb threat is made, the district's emergency response plan calls for teachers to sweep their classrooms for potential explosives and listen for "ticking" noises, according to internal instructions given anonymously to the Tribune. If a suspicious item is located, teachers are instructed not to touch it and to report it immediately to building administration.
Are educators qualified detectors?
