Bill_BozemanInnovative IP Video Solutions Continue To Drive the Industry Forward... Faster

By Gadi Piran

As witnessed at the most recent ISC West show, new powerful IP-based video surveillance software solutions continue to drive the industry's migration to networked operations. Crowds of security professionals surrounding the exhibits of IP centric solution providers are testimony to the fact that the convergence of physical security and traditional IT applications is clearly more than a trend - it is the future of the security industry. It is also no longer a question of when this transition will take place - it is a question of how fast the change takes place as the deployment of networked video surveillance and security systems is already experiencing double digit annual growth.

Pioneers in the field of IP video surveillance control and management solutions continue to pursue new ways to further accelerate this process with more advanced IP video surveillance management solutions that increase security and response time, and reduce operational implementation costs. Introductions of new IP control and management solutions at ISC West were extremely well received providing further testimony to the industry's new direction.

Aside from the control versatility offered by new software innovations, the ability to easily integrate video surveillance cameras and related systems equipment from virtually any supplier are redefining the term "open architecture". IP software has moved into the spotlight in terms of how systems are designed and configured based on an open platform. An additional area of focus when developing IP software is to deliver a unique human interface to simplify even the most complex operations. Industry professionals have earmarked the combination of open architecture and an intuitive control platform as high priorities.

The availability of true open architecture solutions enables integration of comprehensive physical security and video analytic functionality across a host of video surveillance operations and related systems such as alarm and Point of Sale (POS). The integration of these capabilities allows fewer operators to effectively monitor thousands of cameras in control room and desktop environments. In addition to the increased security benefits new IP systems provide, they can also substantially reduce manpower and equipment costs. New touch-screen, map-based interfaces also allow for powerful investigation tools that provide immediate access and response to recorded events and corresponding data. This is accomplished with advanced system performance features and functionality to more effectively monitor, analyze, control and record system cameras with unlimited scalability.

The intelligence built into new IP control and management platforms cross several operational parameters with outstanding results. While everything is recorded for archival use, new IP software solutions focus most on what security professionals need to see at any given moment. By utilizing advanced analytics to detect and filter events, IP control and management solutions employ push technologies similar to those found in diverse IT management and reporting applications. Events and occurrences that have been defined by the user can be pushed to operators' monitoring stations and to remote and mobile locations. As a result, security operations are more effective and efficient with new IP software solutions - the impetus behind the security industry's rapid acceleration to a networked platform.

The Mystery and Wonder of PSIM -
A SecurityDreamer Event in D.C.

Up to this point, PSIM has been a nice idea and a marketing expression, falling short of an actual definition. However, Physical Security Information Management is very real. Security directors and manufacturers are embarrassed by the primitive tools of event management in our command centers today.

At the next SecurityDreamer event we're going to dig in to PSIM and un-earth its treasures, sharing best practices, deployment secrets and hidden dangers. For investing opportunities, for deploying PSIM solutions, for partnering with the right people, you'll want to be in the room.

This invitation only event is for investors, integrators, resellers and end-users -- anyone interested in making money and solving problems with PSIM.

Where:Bethesda, Maryland
When: Wednesday, June 4th

Combating Crime With One Click Of A Mouse; Cyberwatch Alerts Help Concerned Citizens Feed Tips To Police

Some days it's shoplifting, theft from a car, theft of a car. Prostitutes, sex offenders, aggravated assaulters make appearances every now and then. Each morning, about 5,000 people in the Memphis area open their e-mails to find out about miscreants who lurk and prey in their neighborhoods. It's part of a crime-fighting tool launched last year by the Memphis Police Department called CyberWatch.
How is the new system different?

SEC Cover 0508 Security MagazineSurveying Access Control Systems
by Jeffrey Dingle

At some point in a security operation, an assessment needs to be made of your access control needs.  Unfortunately, this review generally occurs after an event ("event" is a polite word for "problem").  While post-event review is important, it's also important to review the operations on a periodic or regular basis.  Generally speaking, a review of your system will occur for one of three reasons:  after an event, on a regular, periodic basis, and whenever a significant change in operations or property occurs.

This column will address WHAT to look for when reviewing your access system.  The questions are geared toward a building.  Each building is addressed separately, with multiple buildings comprising a facility.  These basic questions will provide a good overview of your operation.
