Bill_BozemanYou Are Not Alone - Network Integrators Face Similar Choices and Challenges

By Bill Bozeman

Orlando was a great place to be recently if you have an interest in the latest network-based technology and what the network savvy security integrator may look like in the future.

Attending the 1nService Interchange 2008 event was a pleasure and an eye opener. This conference was one event where I did not need to carry the "embrace the network flag" as the people who make up the 1nService organization are our nation's première network integrators.

The majority of the 1nService integrators are Cisco partners, with the highest levels of certification. They are also wireless and storage experts who service the network requirements of large national and regional accounts. The 1nService organization consists of the most technically competent group of network integrators I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Considering all of the above compliments, 1nService members still face the same challenges and choices that PSA integrators and other competent physical integrators face on a day-to-day basis.

CHALLENGE PART ONE  To satisfy customers who seek integrators who possess skills that encompass physical and logical security, as well as the network expertise required to deliver a seamless, painless deployment.

CHALLENGE PART TWO  To determine if the chief security officer (CSO) is pleased with the company's latest network-based security deployment and the integrator chosen for the project. Chances are the CSO will stress a need for improvement.

After evaluating the variables, three options exist for the independent physical, logical, and network integrators, who tend to come from and focus on a specific discipline.

OPTION ONE  Make the commitment to learn and become certified in the areas you have not focused on in the past. This option will take considerable time and financial resources. To assure success, it must become part of your formal, budgeted business plan.

OPTION TWO  Partner with a integrator who can supplement your current expertise and certification. Physical integrators should seek out network integrators with network certification; network integrators should partner with physical security integrators experienced in security and life safety requirements and certifications.

OPTION THREE  Do nothing; hope proprietary systems will continue forever and that RG 59 will pave the way to a golden retirement.

In summary, I suggest Option One if you can afford the time and are willing to make the financial commitment, Option Two if you have immediate needs and prefer to ease into new opportunities, and Option Three if you think that only Social Security income will meet your retirement needs.

The Mystery and Wonder of PSIM - A SecurityDreamer Event in D.C.

Up to this point, PSIM has been a nice idea and a marketing expression, falling short of an actual definition. However, Physical Security Information Management is very real. Security directors and manufacturers are embarrassed by the primitive tools of event management in our command centers today.

PSIM is an opportunity for end-users to manage situations more quickly and effectively; for integrators to up-sell to their existing customers, and for investors to enrich their portfolios.

At the next SecurityDreamer event we're going to dig in to PSIM and un-earth its treasures, sharing best practices, deployment secrets and hidden dangers. For investing opportunities, for deploying PSIM solutions, for partnering with the right people, you'll want to be in the room.

This invitation only event is for investors, integrators, resellers and end-users -- anyone interested in making money and solving problems with PSIM.

When: Wednesday, June 4th

New Police Radio System To Debut: Sophisticated Setup Will Allow Connections With Other Agencies, Improve Response Times

In a few weeks, Gastonia police officers will be hooked up to a more sophisticated radio system that will allow them to connect directly to some other agencies in the region. That means they'll be able to respond to calls faster, even if something happens across county lines. Eventually, officials said, the system could streamline communication among emergency responders within the county and across the region.
How is the new system different?

FBI: Wi-Fi Users Vulnerable To Computer Hackers

The FBI issued an alert this week warning that wireless Internet networks, often called Wi-Fi- hotspots, are more vulnerable to hackers than most users probably realize. In South Florida, Wi-Fi hotspots are at airports, fast food restaurants, book stores, coffee shops, sports bars, school campuses, malls, supermarkets -- just about everywhere. Several cities and neighborhoods in the region plan to eventually install networks for residents, too. For everyone to be able to access the networks, though, security has to be low. That means that often there is no password or registration needed to use the service, and E-mails and instant messages are not encrypted.
How can users protect their computers from hackers?

How will this technology work?

SEC Cover 0508 Security MagazineWhat the CEO Thinks
by Bill Zalud & Terry Maddry

In the face of a slowing economy and pressures on budgets, chief executive officers, when asked about their security operations, say it is most important that the chief security officer (CSO) execute his or her plan effectively and also protect the reputation of the enterprise.

Security Magazine, with the assistance of Maddry Associates, surveyed 100 CEOs relative to what they think about security and their security operation. The annual program discovered that, this year, the focus is even more on business issues.
