As Oil Prices Soar, Restaurant Grease Thefts Rise
The bandit pulled his truck to the back of a Burger King in Northern California one afternoon last month armed with a hose and a tank. After rummaging around assorted restaurant rubbish, he dunked a tube into a smelly storage bin and, the police said, vacuumed out about 300 gallons of grease. Will restaurants beef up their security?
Finger-Scan Lock Reduces Entry Hassles
The new Weiser SmartScan system is the first consumer-grade lockset I've seen that eliminates the need for keys and codes. All you need to open a SmartScan is the swipe of a registered fingertip.
How smart is the SmartScan system?
NY Times Has A Gaze At Face-Tracking "Controversy"
Maybe I'm naive, but the whole fuss that seems to be bubbling up about face tracking technology for digital billboards and screens has that much ado about nothing feel to it. As an old newspaper editor I have too many times been in slow news day planning meetings that ended up with reporters being sent out to find people who were upset with something or other, often people who weren't terribly well informed on the issue of the day or who had all of 10 seconds to develop an opinion. Now the New York Times has smarter people than the papers I worked for "they hired me, so they were obviously damaged souls" but they nonetheless sent out a reporter and did a piece that really reaches to
drum up a fuss. What's the controversy about? |
 Surveying Access Control Systems
by Jeffrey Dingle
At some point in a security operation, an assessment needs to be made of your access control needs. Unfortunately, this review generally occurs after an event ("event" is a polite word for "problem"). While post-event review is important, it's also important to review the operations on a periodic or regular basis. Generally speaking, a review of your system will occur for one of three reasons: after an event, on a regular, periodic basis, and whenever a significant change in operations or property occurs.

SECURITY IN CONTEXT It's the System, Stupid by Laura Stepanek
Pardon the attention-grabbing headline and obvious copy of former President Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign slogan, courtesy of strategist James Carville. I wanted to point out the need for the physical security industry to think in more holistic terms regarding the future of security deployments. During the recent ISC West show, I was encouraged to see more vendors "Get IT" and "digital" has officially replaced "analog," at least in the marketing materials and show booth advertising. This is a welcome development compared with just a few short years ago. Look for the rest of this article in the
